Genesis

A few years ago my parents told me a story about what they saw at Orange World, a local orange farm in Victoria. They said the tour guide stopped them in front of a giant pile of oranges, pointed to it, and said “all of these oranges can’t be sold”. Some were too big, some were too small, others had marks, so they couldn’t be sold to buyers such as supermarkets. So they’d just rot, right there on the ground.

That image stayed with me for some time. All of those oranges, and the energy poured into growing it… left to rot. As this played around in my mind a simple question emerged:

What if we didn't let it?

That question is how Rema was born, the genesis of turning food waste into high performing and sustainable biomaterials.

We're just getting started, and there's a lot we're still figuring out. But what started with a pile of oranges in Mildura is growing quickly, so stick around for the journey.
